Introduction to Veneers

Very popular in cosmetic dentistry nowadays, a veneer is a thin layer of material placed over the front visible tooth surface which can transform the colour, shape and size of the tooth.

A dental veneer restoration dramatically improves the appearance of a tooth.

The main types of material used to make a veneer; composite and porcelain. A composite veneer is usually built-up in the mouth a process known as Cosmetic Bonding.

Porcelain veneers are more durable, have better aesthetics, and less likely to stain than veneers made of composite.

Composite veneers are generally cheaper than porcelain veneers.

Types of Veneers

Veneers at Cambridge Dental Hub

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted of tooth-coloured materials designed to cover the front surface of the tooth to improve the overall appearance. They are made of either thin plastic resin or porcelain and can be placed to:
  • correct poorly formed or mildly mal-positioned teeth
  • close gaps between teeth
  • mask internal stains
  • restore partially broken-down teeth

Tooth preparation is minimal and confined to the enamel structure. The veneer is bonded to the tooth structure with tooth-coloured resin cement. Several visits are necessary to complete treatment.

They are commonly used in our smile design cases to give patients the perfect white smiles they have always wanted.

In what type of cases would veneers be suitable?

Dental veneers are an ideal form of treatment if you have any of the following:

  • Chipped teeth.
  • Stained and discoloured teeth.
  • Spacing between the teeth (which you are unhappy with).
  • Mildly crooked teeth.
  • Teeth that aren’t a great shape (e.g. too short or too narrow).
